Where the 37.78x figure comes from
It is arithmetic, not a study. 1.01 raised to the power of 365 is 37.78. 0.99 raised to the power of 365 is 0.03. James Clear opens Atomic Habits with this comparison and it has been repeated everywhere since.
It is worth being precise about what it is and is not. It is an illustration of compounding, and a good one. It is not a measurement of how habits actually improve — nobody gets literally 1% better at reading every day, and no real skill compounds smoothly for 365 days.
What survives the caveat is the shape of the curve. Small consistent inputs produce results that look negligible for a long time and then do not, and the flat early stretch is exactly when people conclude it is not working. That is the useful part.
The middle number is the important one
The perfect-record box and the sliding-backwards box make a rhetorical point. The realistic box makes a practical one.
Set the missed-days slider to 20% — a rate most people would consider a failure — and the result is still enormous compared with zero. Missing days is not what ends habits. Concluding that missing days has ruined it is what ends habits.
This is why the streak rule that matters is never miss twice rather than never miss. A single miss barely moves the curve. Two consecutive misses is where the behaviour stops being your default, and that is the event worth defending against.
How to use this honestly
Do not treat the multiplier as a prediction. You will not be 37 times better at anything in a year. The number describes a shape, not an outcome.
